I was recently upgrading a recently purchased Used $3 Million Dollar Homes Security system when I was installing a wireless Carbon Monoxide Detector near what was suppose to be a Natural Gas Only Fire Place .
Took a second look and sure as hell some one had burned wood logs in it
and the new owner was about to do the same thing. Thinking the gas was for starting the fire place WRONG.
The interior of the chimney which was not lined with proper liner and just standard brick was destroyed and spalled off.
Had the new owner started a fire in the fire place it would have been his last .
The heat from fire would have gone thru the broken brick hit wood and ignited the wood
He and his family very well could have perished in an overnight fire .
yet as dangerous as this scenario is it goes on all too often and to make matters worse the home inspector never caught it and other issues in the home.
Now you would think there would be some kind of warning label some where not to burn wood and there is not . I have seen over a dozen cases of this wood being burned in gas fire places and twice as a volunteer firefighter responded to such fires .
The CPSC needs to demand better warning labeling on Gas Only Fire Places .
